The Sakhu-Nagarkot hike is not just one of the easiest and exciting hikes in the valley but is also packed with culturally significant and naturally beautiful places. Starting for the small Newari village of Sakhu, the trail takes to the naturally mesmerizing Nagarkot. Along the way, you get to observe holy pilgrimages and beautiful landscapes.
About Sakhu and Nagarkot
Sakhu is a newar village which holds the medieval values and cultures and stands as a pilgrimage for many Hindus. Nagarkot on the other hand is a popular tourist destination flocked by bth national aand international travel enthusiasts.
Nagarkot is known mostly for its picnic spots which provide a beautiful view of the rising sun early in the moring and the hills surrounding the valley which seems to be floating in the clouds. Nagarkot’s highest point is elevated at 2175 meters which displays the entire valley in a miniature form.
The Route
The hiking from Sakhu to Nagarkot takes around 5 hours. The distance of the hike is approximately 12 kms. Early in the morning, a drive to Sakhu begins the hike. The route passes through the Sankhu bazaar which is popular for its local sweet shops.
The routes might be misleading but can be easily sorted with the help of the friendly locals. The trail eventually leads to the naturally beautiful, Nagarkot. Sitting on the edge of the valley, Nagarkot offers a mesmerizing view of the valley from high above its view point.
From those wanting to continue the hike a little more can reach to the temple of Changunarayan along a ridge. The route then leads back to your respective destination.
The Scenery
Sakhu offers a view of the cultural diversity and the unity amongn the community residing there. You can observe the warm and inviting Newari people who are closely knitted to their community and culture.
One of the tourist attractions of Sakhu is the Vajrajogini temple which is a holy place for the Hindus. On a particular month a huge fest is observed in the worship of goddess Parvati. Nagarkot gives a view of the high standing snow filled mountain ranges of Gaurishankar, Everst and Langtang.
The Changu Narayan temple is not just a pilgrimage but also offers views of the Sankhu village and Bhaktapur. Sitting on the top of a small hill, the Changu Narayan temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the oldest temple in Nepal.
