About Kathmandu

Kathmandu was formed form the joint efforts of many kings in the past century, thus it is home to many cultures. Kathmandu comprises of mostly the Newari population who have contributed a lot to the formation of the ancient palaces and temples around the area.

The Tour

The tour begins from your respective destination from where you can take a public bus or a private car to Kathmandu Durbar Square early in the morning. The tour is estimated to take around 4 hours. After the tour ends you can have lunch around the Kathmandu Durbar Square and then head back to your respective destination.

The Scenery

The Kathmandu Durbar Square is filled with temples made during the time of the Malla rulers by the Newari artists. When you enter the vicinity, the TalejuBhawani at the northern side of the palace greets you. It was built in 1501 by the first king of Kathmandu city, RatnaMalla. The TalejuBhawani is a deity of the Buddhists and the Hindus. Around the actual palace is was the Kasthamandap which is a wood house where Kumari, the living goddess, resided but it was destroyed during the April 25th, 2015 massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake. King RanaBahadur Shah is also known to have contributed to the Durbar square by building Shiva Parvati temple and also placing the metal plated head of SwetBhairav.

The palace is named Hanuman Dhoka which is derived from the statue of the monkey devotee of Lord Ram, Hanuman which greets you at the entrance. It has been said in the scriptures that it was built in the tenth century by the King Gunakamadev. The palace is a proof of the beautiful architectural culture amidst the Newari community at the olden times. The palace is now being used as a museum and holds collection of the Malla and Rana kings. The southern end of Kathmandu Durbar Square welcomes you to the KumariChowk.
